Sleep: something we all uniquely do. I have always been that kind of person who hits the sheets and is out. I rarely wake up and am out till the morning. With that being said, there are also times where I cannot sleep. I also sleep next to someone, (aka Alex) who has trouble going to sleep sometimes. Therefore, I have created some methods to help not only him and I but any of you as well. These are methods that work for me and I am in no way a sleep expert. However, if you are curious what I have found to be helpful to fall asleep and wake up feeling great then just keep on reading.
I love to meditate. I am someone who has a million thoughts running through my head all the time and sometimes the best thing to do is shut it off and relax my mind. Mediating makes me feel like a new person which sounds crazy, I know, but I do. I feel so much more calm, collected, and relaxed which is exactly what you want when you go to bed.
For meditating, I use the app Breathe on the iPhone and Android. What I love about this app is that they have all sorts of different types of meditations. Some of them include gratitude, mindful breathing, body scan, etc. They are pretty short sessions, never longer than 10 minutes which is really all I need to get calm and relaxed. If you don’t want to use an app you can always research different types of meditations and try some on your own! There are so many different types out there. It is worth a shot, right?
Sleep with feet and hands outside of blankets
ok yes, call me weird but did you know that there is a relation between sleep and our body temperature. I found it very weird that I usually tend to wake up because either my hands or feet are really hot. I looked it up and found this article here. Have a read if you are interested but, according to researchers, we loose a lot of our heat through our hands and feet. Therefore, sticking them out of the blankets at night can lower our body temperature to the optimal temperature needed for sleep, therefore making it easier to get some rest. I do this and I find I do sleep better, very random, but cool nonetheless.
Always stick to your night routine
This pains me to say, but there was a time in my life where I went to sleep without getting ready for bed. I know that there are so many people who still do this and it needs to stop. This is not only hurting your sleep (because you suddenly get up in the middle of the night and go to the bathroom half asleep getting ready for bed) but it hurts your skin and body. I thought it was no big deal until I noticed a huge difference in my skin, health, and sleep habits. I go to bed feeling much calmer, cleaner, and healthier, all of which make my night and mornings better.
Drink lots of water throughout the day
When we sleep we become dehydrated. We go 7-8 hours without any water and if you hadn’t had any during the day before, by the morning you are like a dried up raisin. I am still working on getting lots of water in throughout the day. However, when I do stay hydrated all day long, I get a better nights rest and feel much better the next day.
Set up your schedule for tomorrow
This tip will help you to wake up and go to bed with no stress. When I make and review my to-do list, schedule, goals, or plans the night before I feel so much better! This is one of the easiest things to do as well. Get a white board, use your phone, a post-it note, whatever helps you. Next, write down what needs to get done, and visually watch the stress go away. When you schedule your day and go to bed feeling organized, I bet you will wake up feeling better. Your mornings will not be full of scrambling all over the place stressing what needs to get done.
P.S. I did not include getting off your phone/tablet/computer as sometimes that is just way too difficult and I like to be a realist, hehe. However, if you have the willpower to do that, go you!
